Patek Philippe presents the first aviator-style travel chronograph The quintessential aviator complication has finally appeared for the first time in a Patek Philippe collection.
Patek Philippe has launched a new Calatrava Pilot Travel Time Chronograph ref. 5924G, the brand's first chronograph in the Pilot watch collection to feature a flyback chronograph.
The white gold case measures 42mm wide by 13.05mm thick and is water-resistant to 30 meters, with a choice of two dials: sunburst blue-gray and lacquered khaki green especially military-inspired, each with a matching calfskin strap. Both feature gold applied numerals with a luminescent coating.

Aesthetically, it's a huge relief. My eyes found the original chronograph-style pushers a bit oversized and overbearing. But, then again, they do fit the aesthetic of 1930s-style pilot watches that Patek Philippe is trying to evoke, even if that style seems far removed from the rest of the brand's catalogue. Something about the more traditional case layout and inclusion of the chronograph feels like what a watch should have always been.
My main issue is the ease of use of the new travel time. While the Nautilus and Aquanaut travel time functions work through finer pushers, the new Pilot's Travel Time Chronograph's pushers look like what you'd see on the brand's calendars, with the pushers embedded in the case, albeit perhaps slightly bigger.
I hate having to pull out a pen to set the travel time, especially since it's such an elegant and smooth solution for a second time zone. We'll have to see how it works in an upcoming hands-on.
